The Plum Blossom: The Courage to Begin Again

The plum blossom opens before spring arrives, while winter still holds and the branches remain bare. This made it a longstanding symbol of resilience in Chinese art and culture.

For women who left the places where plum trees grew, the flower travelled with them as a familiar motif. It appeared in textiles, carved wood and the decoration of homes made elsewhere, preserving both the memory of the landscape and the meaning attached to it.

Beginning Again Before You Feel Ready

For The Flowers We Inherited, the Plum Blossom enters the Choo Yilin universe for the first time. Its story begins in the memories of our grandmothers and great grandmothers and reaches women facing a different kind of beginning now.

At some point, life asks many women to begin again before they feel ready. The life they understood has changed, and the next must be made from what remains.

This is what Choo Yilin sees in the Plum Blossom: the courage to return to life after a season that has changed you.

White Type A jadeite blossoms are set against organic 18KT antique-yellow gold and accented with diamonds. The pale carved flowers appear along warm, irregular branches like the first signs of life in a winter landscape.

The pieces were created for moments of passage: a marriage, an anniversary, or a jewel chosen for a woman entering a new chapter.

A WINTER FLOWER, CARVED IN JADE

After the Camellia in 2009, Cherry Blossom in 2013 and Hydrangea in 2017, the Plum Blossom becomes the newest flower in the Choo Yilin botanical universe. It records another stage in the house’s evolving understanding of what flowers can carry.

Passed into another woman’s hands one day, it may carry the knowledge that winter returns, and life returns with it.
