Three easy tips to care for your Choo Yilin jade piece

 

One of the most common questions we get asked is how to care for your jade pieces without having to put too much thought into it. 

You may have heard that even the most well maintained jewellery needs professional restoration (in the form of polishing, plating etc.) every now and then. And while that holds true, the good news is, there are very simple things you can do at home to keep your jewellery looking fresh and feeling loved.

Here are three incredibly simple hacks that you can effortlessly adopt in the everyday care of your Choo Yilin jade piece. 

  1. Social distance your jewellery -

    keep the jade pieces away from other pieces of jewellery.

Quite simply, when storing your jade jewellery, keep away from other pieces, especially other metal jewellery. Whilst jade is widely known to be the toughest gemstone, it’s not actually very hard. We’ve shared more about the difference between toughness and hardness in our comprehensive Guide to Jade, but to sum it up, because metal is a lot harder than jade, placing them in close contact could result in visible scratch marks on the jade surface. 

2. The artisans’ secret -

Gently dab and rub (only) the jade bits with high quality olive oil.

Our jade artisans have let us in on a little secret: traditional wisdom has it that rubbing a little olive oil into the surface of your jade adds a little extra flair to its lustre. We advise using a lint-free cloth infused with a few drops of olive oil and then dabbing it on the jade surface, avoiding the intricate metal work. Gently rub it off with a damp cloth and voila, watch as your jade shines with that extra glow. 

3. Wearing is caring -

wear your jade jewellery often!

We love this one because there’s no actual work to be done, it’s one of those minimum input maximum output situations. Part of the magic of jade is that it interacts with your body’s natural oils in a wonderful way.
