Three Easy Tips for Storing Your Fine Jewellery
There is no one size fits all solution when it comes to the storage of fine jewellery. But one thing is certain -- whether it’s your engagement ring or wedding trousseau, those cherished family heirlooms or that piece you bought yourself to commemorate an achievement unlocked -- you’ll want to make sure your fine jewellery pieces are well protected. Here are three simple storage tips you can practice to keep them safe for years to come.
1. Pick a safe spot for your jewellery to call “home”.
A jewellery box with soft lining makes a good home for fine jewellery pieces. Your original Choo Yilin box makes for a good alternative.
This is perhaps a seemingly obvious thing to say, but do keep your fine jewellery away from places where it could be vulnerable to dropping or unfortunate accidents. A not-uncommon accident would be when a young one would wander over, curiously grab, and unintentionally throw. Avoid an “oops” moments by picking a safe spot.
2. Apart is a good place to be.
Minimise the risk of your precious gemstones (including jade and pearls) getting scratched and damaged by keeping them apart. Sorting and storing specific metals (such as yellow gold, white gold, rose gold etc) and types (necklaces, bracelets, earrings, rings etc) separately can also contribute towards the preservation of your fine jewellery pieces.
3. Desiccants are our friends.
A less common hack, but one that we strongly recommend, especially if you (and your jewellery) live in a tropical climate, is to use desiccants*.
The use of silica gel, dehumidifier units, and dry boxes can help to reduce humidity in the environment, in turn slowing down the rate of oxidation in jewellery. (And as a happy bonus, it also helps prevent the occurence of mould on other things like your leather bags or shoes.)
*This advice is suitable for most jewellery, with some exceptions to the rule. Pearls and opals, for example, should not be kept in an environment that is too dry.
