Mama’s Brocade Pochette: A Gift Inspired by Madam T
In 2025, we created the first Mama's Brocade Pochette as a small gift of craft, shaped by fabric and the women who first taught us to treasure beautiful things.
We knew we loved it. We did not anticipate how deeply so many of you would love it too.
The first Mama's Brocade Pochette
When we began creating The Flowers We Inherited, we found ourselves returning to brocade with a more particular question:
“If Madam T were choosing the fabric herself, which one would catch her eye?”
Madam T is the Peranakan matriarch we first met in The Influencers Before Us. We glimpsed her again on her honeymoon in Oxford, choosing an old mine-cut floral brooch that others might have passed by. She was a woman who trusted her own eye, drawn to objects that rewarded a closer look.
We imagined this brocade would have delighted her. Flowers tumble freely across the fabric, while birds appear and disappear between them. As the light moves, the colours shift and another detail reveals itself.
For Madam T, this abundance was joy. She loved objects that felt alive with colour and texture, their details revealing themselves over time. Like the jewellery she collected, its beauty is not contained in a single detail, but in the richness of everything coming together.
And perhaps there is something fitting about returning to brocade for The Flowers We Inherited. Flowers have long travelled beyond gardens, finding new lives in jewellery, porcelain, embroidery and cloth. Here, they become part of an object made to hold the pieces we choose to carry with us.
